In Memory of Elena Chiang Hatfield

Elena Chiang Hatfield was born on May 13, 1945 in Taichung, Taiwan. Elena was very good at math and talented in the arts. She won many painting and drawing competitions as a child.

She moved to the United States as a teenager and showed her artistic skill quickly in Gainesville, Florida, attending her junior and senior year of high school and was immediated recognized as a talented person. She was determined to choose interior design which combined her math skill with her artistic abilities.

She obtained her bachelor degree in interior design at the University of Florida in the School of Architecture. Elena began her illustrious career in the Washington DC area, first with the International Institute of Interior Design. Her husband, Terry Hatfield, brought her to Washington DC. The International Institute of Interior Design eventually merged with another college. Elena taught in several schools in teh area before beginning her job with Montgomery College as an adjunct professor of interior design in 1985 until retiring in 2005 to coincide with her husband's retirement.

She also taught Chinese painting to Chinese youth at various Chinese schools and eventually the Washington School of Chinese Language and Culture (WSCLC). She was very active in supporting events that showcased Chinese culture arts in the Metro DC area.

She passed away suddenly on June 17, 2021. In memory of Elena, her colleagues and her husband would like to hold an exhibit to showcase her oil and watercolor paintings and Chinese paintings. She truly has a special, talented, and loving person.
